Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Make This With Regular Potatoes?

Yes, you definitely can. Aloo chaat is actually a super famous Indian street snack, and using regular potatoes is a great option if you don’t have sweet potatoes in your kitchen. Using sweet potatoes is better in the sense that it has more nutritive value as opposed to regular potatoes, which makes this a healthier snack option.  Zoom in view of Sweet Potato Chaat

What Else Can I Add?

This sweet potato chaat recipe uses just a few simple additional kitchen ingredients, but you can definitely throw in a lot more depending on what your taste buds prefer, and what you have in your pantry.
Chopped-up bell peppers, cucumber, and spring onions are great choices.

Can I Use Any Other Lentils?

While this recipe calls for the use of boiled black chickpeas, you could actually use almost any other lentils of your choice. Chickpeas, black-eyed peas, and green gram are some great options you can never go wrong with- they are easily available and have a subtle taste that works well with all the other ingredients that are a part of this sweet potato chaat.
The lentils don’t just add a punch of protein to the dish, but also make it more filling, which is great. To further improve the nutritive value of the lentils you are using, you can choose to sprout them.  Spicy Sweet Potato Chaat

Can I Make & Store The Sweet Potato Chaat For Later?

You actually can! Just remember to add the fresh ingredients (aka tomatoes and onions) into the mix right before you serve, as they tend to lose water if stored for later, and can make your chaat soggy and lumpy.
You can bake or fry your sweet potatoes in advance, mix them up with the spices if you want to, and then transfer it all to an airtight container and refrigerate. This can stay good in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezing the sweet potatoes is not recommended, since the potatoes can lose their texture once you thaw them.

What Other Variations Can I Try?

This sweet potato chaat is easy to put together thanks to its simple process, but you can actually go ahead and give it your own twist if you want to. For instance, instead of frying the sweet potatoes, you could chop up the raw potatoes, air fry them, or bake them and then use them for the recipe.

Another excellent idea is to roast the sweet potato, chop it up and then follow the rest of the recipe as is. This will not just reduce the calorie count of the recipe, but will also lend the chaat a nice distinct smoky flavor.
