Frequently Asked Questions

What Else Can I Add?

These cheesy potato balls are versatile, and while they taste best when you follow the recipe, you can actually tweak and play around with the ingredients based on your taste preferences and what you have at hand.
If you’re not too keen on using chicken in the filling, you can skip it and throw in some more veggies instead. Chopped bell peppers, carrots, and cabbage are some good options. Golden corn is another excellent classic you can never go wrong with. And if you’re trying to make these potato balls a bit healthier, you can add blanched and chopped spinach into the stuffing as well.

How Else Can I Cook Them?

While these cheesy potato balls are deep-fried until they have that nice and crunchy outer, you don’t necessarily have to stick to going that route. You can choose to air fry them too- great if you’re trying to limit your consumption of deep-fried foods.
These potato balls can be baked too! They obviously won’t have that same level of crunch as the deep-fried version, but taste equally yum!

Can I Prep These Fried Cheesy Potato Balls in Advance?

You sure can! You can prepare the mashed potato mixture a day before, or even put the balls together (without the coating) and store them in a container, refrigerated until they are ready to be fried. This is actually one of those snacks that you can batch make over the weekend, and enjoy through the next week.  Side view image of Crispy Fried Cheesy Potato Balls

What Can I Use Instead of Egg to Coat the Balls?

The classic egg coating is great for almost all deep-fried foods that you’re making, and that’s simply because you’ll get that perfect, uniform outer coating that you want. However, if you don’t want to use egg, you can dip the potato balls in a slurry made of cornflour and water, and then coat them with breadcrumbs.

Can I Make These Fried Cheesy Potato Balls Vegan?

Yes, you can! By tweaking some of the ingredients in the recipe, you can whip up a vegan version of these potato balls too! For instance, the cheese can be replaced by vegan cheese, the chicken can be skipped entirely and the egg coating can be swapped with the cornflour slurry.

How Do I Store the Leftovers?

The best part about these fried cheesy potato balls is the fact that they are freezer friendly! You can store your leftovers in the refrigerator if you’re planning to have them within 2-3 days, or pop them in the freeze for upto 2 months.
Remember that if you’re planning to freeze the potato balls, you’ll need to first transfer them to a freezer-safe container. It also makes sense to just freeze them at the pre-cooked stage, and then fry them fresh when you want to. That way, you’ll get that perfect crispiness from the outer coating that you’re looking for.

Tips to Make the Fried Cheesy Potato Balls

Think you’re ready to give the recipe a try? Keep these additional tips and tricks in mind to make sure you get them right in the first shot.

  • After the potatoes are boiled, allow them to cool down completely before you mash and use them for the recipe. Working with potatoes that are still warm will cause your potato mixture to become too soft and soggy, and hard to work with.
  • Remember not to boil the potatoes until they are too soft and mushy. Getting them out when they’re about 90% done is a good idea.
  • If your potato mixture is still too soft, and you’re having trouble shaping it into balls, you can mix some bread crumbs or rice flour into the potato mixture. This will help soak up all the excess moisture and sort of stiffen the dough.
  • Use any hard or processed cheese for this recipe- cheddar and parmesan are some classics you can never go wrong with. And if you love that cheese pull, you can use a small cube of mozzarella instead.
  • To bring a little variation into this recipe, you can also shape them into small cylinders instead of balls.

Serving Ideas & Suggestions

These fried cheesy potato balls are full of flavor and deliciousness- you can enjoy them on their own, or pair them with some tomato ketchup or mustard on the side. These little bites of deliciousness also taste wonderful when dunked into your favorite chutney or dip.
